Ethiopian vs. Gregorian Calendar – What’s the Difference?
The Gregorian calendar, introduced in 1582, is used worldwide and follows a solar year with 12 months. On the other hand, the Ethiopian calendar is based on ancient Coptic traditions. It has 13 months — twelve with 30 days, and a short one (Pagumē) with five or six days depending on the year.
Because of these differences, Ethiopian dates are usually 7 or 8 years behind Gregorian ones. For example, if it’s 2025 in the Gregorian system, it could still be 2017 or 2018 in Ethiopia!
This can make date tracking, planning, or document filling tricky — especially in business or international settings. That’s why having a reliable converter is a must.
How the Conversion Works (Simplified)
Here’s a quick breakdown of how the conversion happens behind the scenes:
✅ From Ethiopian to Gregorian:
- Add 7 or 8 years to the Ethiopian year (depending on the leap year)
- Subtract 1 from the Ethiopian month
- Keep the day the same
- If it’s a leap year in the Ethiopian calendar, add 1 day to the final result
Example: Ethiopian date 2015-04-25 becomes Gregorian date 2022-03-25
✅ From Gregorian to Ethiopian:
- Subtract 7 or 8 years from the Gregorian year
- Add 1 to the Gregorian month
- Keep the day the same
- If it’s a leap year in the Gregorian calendar, subtract 1 day
Example: Gregorian date 2022-03-25 becomes Ethiopian date 2014-04-25
